Graduate Curriculum

The instruction language of the program, which is offered as thesis and non-thesis variants, is Turkish. The courses are offered at Balgat Campus, at 18:00 p.m

There are two programs, non-thesis and thesis, and the courses of these programs are common. It is possible to switch between thesis and non-thesis programs when the necessary conditions are met.

Students who are not graduates of political science or related departments can be required by the Department of Political Science and International Relations to first take and pass the preparatory course PSI 199 (Politics: Basic Concepts) before they take compulsory and elective courses in both thesis and non-thesis programs. It is possible to take one (1) additional course by submitting a petition to the Department during the period when the scientific preparation course is taken.

The non-thesis program requires 3 compulsory and 7 elective courses must be taken. In addition to these 10 courses, there is a condition that the PSI 592/ Project course must be completed under the supervision of a faculty member / assistant and presented to the jury. The total number of general courses is 11. The program (excluding the scientific preparation) must be completed in a total of 3 semesters.

The thesis program requires 7 courses which consists of 3 must and 4 elective courses. In addition to these courses, the RME 500 (Research Methods and Ethics) course must be taken. In addition, there is a prerequisite for completing the PSI 590/ Seminar course under the supervision of a faculty member and presenting it to the jury. The total number of general courses is 9, in addition to this, a thesis must be written.

Students enrolled in the thesis program are recommended to take the RME 500 (Research Methods and Ethics) course in the early semesters. This course must be taken and successfully completed by the end of the fourth semester.

Students in the thesis program are expected to be able to read English materials due to the nature of the discipline. “The Chicago Manual of Style” reference system is used while writing the thesis. In order to earn the Master’s degree, the thesis must be successfully defended before a jury of academics. PSI 199 (Politics: Basic Concepts) and some electives can be opened in both terms. And when the sections are announced by all sections, only one opens.

Scientific Preparation Course (only for specified students)

During the semester when Scientific Preparation (PSI 199) course is taken, one (1) more course can be taken by submitting a petition to the Department.

Compulsory Courses (Thesis program)

In the thesis program, 4 elective courses must be taken in addition to these courses.

Compulsory Courses (Non-thesis program)

In the non-thesis program, 7 elective courses must be taken in addition to these courses.

Seminar and Project Period

• To complete the program, students with thesis are required to enroll in the seminar (PSI 590), and non-thesis students are required to enroll in the project course (PSI 592) and get a successful grade.

• According to the graduate regulations, students with thesis must successfully complete their seminars in four semesters at the latest, and students without thesis in three semesters at the latest.

Seminar/ Project Topic

• Before the seminar or project course period starts, the subject to be studied must be determined. Topic content can be of different nature, such as expanding a previously studied topic, choosing a new topic, or presenting a chapter from the thesis topic.

Seminar/ Project Consultant

• Before the start of the semester in which the seminar/project will be presented, or at the latest during the registration of the relevant semester, the student should determine the subject to be studied and convey it to a faculty member.

• After the faculty member accepts the subject and the student, the following form is filled and the studies are started under the supervision of the relevant academician.

Form and Implication

• Seminars/projects should be written in Times New Roman, 12 pt, double line spacing, between 20-50 pages.

• While preparing the study, attention should be paid to the reference system and the use of bibliography.

• The study should be prepared by using The Chicago Manual of Style system and giving footnotes according to this system.

• Before the work is submitted to the jury, it must be checked for similarity/plagiarism. Programs such as turnitin or ithenticate can be used for this. It is necessary to be in contact with the project/seminar consultant on the subject.

• There are two delivery processes in the works. The first submission is the delivery of spiral printouts to the members of the jury before the presentations.

• The second and final submission is made after the jury finds the work successful in the presentations. After all checks and corrections are made, two (2) hardcover/spiral copies with the signatures of the jury are delivered to the Department.

Presentations

• Seminar and project studies have to be defended in front of a three-person jury consisting of an academic advisor and two lecturers/instructors.

• Delivery dates are also important in the period when the seminar or project will be presented. The student must submit the final version of the work to the jury members “at the latest” one week, ten days before the presentations. (For example, if the submission date is June 10, it must be submitted to the jury between 1-3 June at the latest.)

• The papers found successful in the presentations should be submitted to the Department in two (2) copies in hardcover/spiral after the corrections indicated by the jury are made.

• Attention should be paid to include the signatures of the jury members in the final submission of the work.

• In order to complete the master’s program, it is obligatory to be successful in seminars and project studies. Failed seminar and project courses must be taken again.
